RADM Woody Beal will take us on a quick trip around the world touching on Russia, China and the Middle East.  He’ll touch on COVID as well as maritime and national security issues.

Rear Adm. Doug “Woody” Beal is a native of Indianapolis, Indiana. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Purdue University, a Master of Science in Engineering Management from Southern Methodist University, and a Master of Science in National Security Studies from the National War College. Commissioned through Aviation Officer Candidate School, he earned wings of gold in 1988.

Initially serving in Attack Squadron (VA) 52 and flying the A-6E Intruder, he deployed to the Western Pacific aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) and USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63). After a flag aide tour with Commander, Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, he transitioned to the F/A-18 Hornet, serving as the strike operations officer for Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9 deploying on USS Nimitz (CVN 68).

Affiliating with the reserve component in 1999, he continued flying the F/A-18 with the Hunters of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 201. In 2002 he deployed with the Hunters aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) for the squadron’s historic combat cruise, supporting the initial phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Beal’s command tours include squadron command of VFA-201, Training Air Wing 5 Reserve Component Command, and Navy Reserve Augment Unit command tours at U.S. Second Fleet, Carrier Strike Group 4, and U.S. Fleet Forces Command. His previous flag officer assignments were as deputy commander, Navy Recruiting Command and Vice Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command.

Beal has accumulated 3,844 military flight hours, 55 combat sorties and 472 carrier-arrested landings. He is grateful to have served with outstanding Sailors, colleagues and friends whose exceptional teamwork and performance have enabled him to wear the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (Individual Action with Combat Distinguishing Device and Strike Flight awards), Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and Battle ‘E’ (Excellence) awards.
